Life at School with Diabetes

Going to school, or dropping a child off at school with Diabetes can be an uneasy time - but it doesn't have to be! We have a few things for you to keep in mind to help manage Diabetes while at school.

Storing supplies

It is a good idea to have a few back up supplies stored at school - these may come in handy if you run out of insulin, pull a site change out, or incase you are unable to get home during an emergency! Make sure you label your supplies with your name.
Picture
Where to store diabetes supplies at school:
  • In a cupboard in the classroom/teacher's desk
  • In the school office/sick bay
  • In your locker
  • A few back up supplies at the bottom of your bag
Supplies to include in your supplies at school:
  • Insulin (some back up long acting if you are on an insulin pump)
  • Testing strips, a meter, finger pricker
  • Syringes/pens/needle caps
  • Hypo supplies - glucose/juice/snacks
  • A battery (for your insulin pump)
  • Written record of your insulin doses/basal rates

School camps

School camp can be the most exciting time of the year, but there are a few extra things to think about. If you have a school camp coming up, touch base with your diabetes team to come up with a diabetes management plan.

We would love to have you join us at an event soon!
