As an independent, local, and grassroots charity, funding is an ongoing focus for Diabetes Youth Wellington. We rely solely on donations, our own fundraising efforts, and grant funding to continue to provide our support services. Lottery Community have supported DYW for many years now, and we're extremely pleased to announce they have once again supported us in 2019, granting $5000 funding towards the operating costs of our support programme.  Our key priority for this funding is our Family Support Officer (FSO). Our FSO provides one-on-one non-medical support to families, and organises key events including our annual camps. Organisation of the annual camps in particular is a massive undertaking, and beyond what our voluntary committee could manage.
The DYW Committee are volunteers, all of whom either have a child with Type 1 diabetes, or have Type 1 diabetes themselves. We gain a huge amount from the support we give each other, and we're passionate about enabling a vibrant and supportive youth diabetic community across the Wellington region. We want our young diabetics and their families to interact, share challenges, and build their own strong support networks. We want our our children to see that Type 1 diabetes does not need to hold them back in any way. We have funding applications with other trusts that we are waiting to hear the decisions of so watch this space for more good news - we hope!  When designing our new logo we wanted something bright and colourful; and that showed our connection to diabetes, youth, families, and Wellington. The blue circle is the International Diabetes Federations's global symbol for diabetes awareness - so blue was a no-brainer. We've also incorporated 'Hurricane's Gold' (go the Canes!), and red to round off the primary colours (although it could equally represent blood glucose testing!)
Look out for our new banner - finding us at events in public places will be much easier going forward. |
